The Old Fiddlers’ Convention is an unqualified round-the-clock buffet of old-time and bluegrass music. The Convention originated in 1935‚ and except for a single year during World War II‚ it has happened every year since‚ making it about the oldest and most popular such event in Appalachia. At the 2000 Convention a total of 2‚175 musicians registered to compete. During the evenings of the Convention each musician plays his or her selection on stage for the allotted two and a half minutes‚ and sometimes the competition can go on until three or four o’clock in the morning. While that is happening‚ all around the festival grounds musicians and music lovers play and listen to each other. The Convention site has seating for 1‚000 people‚ but it never hurts to bring along folding chairs. At the height of the event on Friday and Saturday evenings‚ an audience of 10‚000 or more may be in attendance‚ so plan to arrive early and stay late – very late. Do not forget to bring along your foul weather gear‚ this event is famous for its sudden and torrential thunder storms.
